Behind the song
This song was written one Ash Wednesday after seeing people, so different from each other, each hurting, yet hopeful too, alone and lonely, yet somehow also finding the courage to come together, on a cold, cold night, to receive the sooty sign of the cross on their foreheads. "It is grace, only grace, that brings us here, hold us all together here."
Also inspired by these words from Frederick Buechner, "Here is the world. Beautiful and terrible things will happen. Don't be afraid. I am with you. Nothing can ever separate us. It's for you I created the universe. I love you."
